Melissa Sue Anderson, star of ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ speaks of her decision to leave Hollywood for Canada

Melissa Sue Anderson, known for her role as Mary Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie,” left Hollywood for Canada. Fans expected her to stay on TV, but she had other plans. Anderson’s career began with guest roles before she became a central figure in “Little House on the Prairie,” earning several Best Lead Actress nominations.

Reflecting on her role, Anderson told Pop Entertainment in 2010, “I’m lucky that there even was a character to play, because in the book, there isn’t much of one.” She felt fortunate they discovered her talent.

In 1990, Anderson married TV producer Michael Sloan. They moved to Montreal in 2002 with their children, Piper and Griffin. The family became Canadian citizens in 2007, leading Anderson to step away from showbiz to focus on her kids. She told E-Talk, “That was really for the kids so they would have their own sense of who they were.”

Though she took small roles later, Anderson’s time on “Little House on the Prairie” inspired her to write a memoir, “The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House.”
